Uh? A cellphone in a Charlie Chaplin film?
'Time Traveler' Spied in 1928 Chaplin Film
"I believe I'm the first person to find something quite unusual from a bit of film footage from 1928," Clarke said. The scene can be found in the extras menu in Documents, under The Hollywood Premiere.
It's not in the movie -- it's real footage and it features real members of the public in 1928. Or does it, asked Clarke, who spotted a mysteriously dressed stranger walking past the camera talking into what he says can only be a mobile phone.
"The only conclusion I can come to -- which sounds absolutely ridiculous I'm sure, to some people -- is it's a time traveler," he said. "When you're looking at a bit of 1928 footage with an old woman ... on a mobile phone, it's kind of strange. You can't explain it."
YouTube user "Barnwash" claims Australian police tested the first true two-way radio in 1928 and that maybe the woman was security in disguise.
Others claim it was a type of hearing aid.
Most of the naysayers hang their arguments on the fact that there were no phone towers or satellites in 1928, but they are quickly shot down by the believers who say those who possess time travel tech surely could circumvent this.
There's also plenty of speculation about the mysterious figure herself ... if it is indeed a woman.
Definitely strange. What do you think?

If it is a cell phone, who would she be talking to?
I don't know, but it does look like she's talking, doesn't it? I'm sure there's some reasonable explanation, but it sure is interesting.
Hmm, stoutish lady, dressed as a floorwalker, matron, or other minor factotum circa 1915, stepping not at all lightly down the sidewalk in her well worn shoes, around 1926 or '27. The shadows and the amount of foot traffic suggest late afternoon.
From her gait the lady is obviously either very tired, or more likely has had a bit of liquid refreshment. Not surprising in the height of prohibition.
She is talking, perhaps. Or perhaps that is a trick of the false foliage. Now what would a weary working woman, respectably dressed in garb a decade past style, with a likely buzz on, be carrying in 1928?
Three things are likely. A flask. A compact, many of which were made in that shape. Or an eyeglass case. The most likely?
Note how her rather battered hat shades her eyes, and the grimace as she turns to face the sun. Her turn and searching attitude suggests she expected someone, perhaps causing an exclamation of disappointment. The eyeglass case.
Stranger
Very weird....
I saw this earlier today and I can honestly say I have no explanation. If it is some type of hoax it is indeed a good one.
I think most are speculating it really is an ear trumpet.Too bad she wasn't wearing a Kobe jersey, then we'd be onto something!
I want to know who her carrier is that gives her reception in the past.
Has anyone went out and bought the DVD? If so, check out where it comes from. If it comes from Ireland, Hmmm. Maybe this guy bought the rights to the movies and is drumming up business. That movie has gone up in popularity 46% in the last week. I will say, though, that it's not "ear trumpet". Ear trumpets had a very distinctive shape. I could go along with Stranger's suggestions.
Mike
Man, I have no answer. I'd bet there's a logical explanation, but it sure is interesting.
