Here at The Classic Liberal Blog (as our regular readers are aware), we like to throw in some non-political posts from time to time.  This is one of those times.

In light of everything going on with the auto industry, and being a native-Detroiter myself (OK, metro-Detroiter, but we all consider ourselves Detroiters around here), I thought it'd be nice to look at some of the good things that have come out of Ford, Chrysler, and GM.

What good is coming out of the Detroit autos these days you ask?

Hat-tip to Bob Parks and his great blog Black & Right, for staying on top of this serious controversy!

With many lawsuits being filed regarding President-elect Obama's birth certificate, one has to wonder why he had the State of Hawaii lock his birth certificate up in a vault.  For that reason alone, his legitimacy to be President of the United States must come under extreme scrutiny.  After all, if he has nothing to hide, there would have been no reason not to release his original birth certificate in the first place.

Obama And The Three D's
Barack Obama has successfully merged Chicago with Clinton-era politics. With that, we now have the Three D's rearing their ugly heads again. For those of you who were in elementary school when Bill Clinton was president, the three D's stood for "deny, delay, destroy".
In this case, with regards to the whole Barack Obama birth certificate stall, the "destroy" part is in regards to the U.S. Constitution, and it takes time (deny and delay) to do this.
With that, meet Sarah P. Herlihy....

Happy Anniversary!

Prohibition's 75th Anniversary!CHEERS!

Today is the 75th anniversary of the repeal of the failed social program known as prohibition!

In 1919, with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, the government outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of "intoxicating liquors." By 1933 however (ratified on Dec. 5), the government was forced into submission, thereby passing the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which repealed Amendment Eighteen.

The classical liberal tradition of self-government, rule by law instead of man, has been relegated to but mere fantasy over the past 100 years.  Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote in his Kentucky Resolutions:

"In questions of power, then, let no more be heard about confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief with the chains of the Constitution."

Concurring, James Madison in The Federalist stated:

"All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree."

The classical liberal spirit of America, that held superior the liberty of individuals and communities to control their own lives, and who learned the valuable lessons of history, holding an inherent distrust of government and its politicians ... has slowly given way to the myth of government as the Supreme Authority.

The United States of America, now having the largest government on the planet, has all but thrown our Declaration of Independence in the garbage, making Washington D.C. our new King.

With the ever-expanding the powers of the executive branch, along with the refusal of Congress to even consider the law of the land - the Constitution of the United States of America - it is no longer debatable ... we are officially traveling the Road to Serfdom.

So tonight, gather up your family and friends, and together enjoy the drink of your choice!  Talk about the implications of liberty lost, and then commit to each other to take positive action in the fight to restore liberty once again!

But don't forget to beware those pesky Neo-Prohibitionists!

Ask What You Can Spend For Your Country

theCL  2008-12-04  Economic, Government, Op-Ed  Comments Off

While reading what I think is one of the best blogs on the net, From my position... on the way, I found this excellent video with Fred Thompson talking about the economy, while putting our minds at ease over it all ...

Fred shares the Good News:

The government has it all figured out, and they've got a plan.  Spend more and borrow more money!
The government wants you to spend your way to prosperity too!
The government has assumed almost $8 trillion in obligations, so they want to make it easier for you to run-up your credit cards too!
The politicians and their "experts" are in consensus - we simply need to "double-down" on the bets that got us into our current economic mess in the first place.

Don't worry! If this sounds crazy to you, it's just because you don't understand the "intricacies" and "sophistication" of our "new" economy.  So sleep peacefully tonight, because ...

The same politicians, economists, business executives, and government officials who guided us to where we are today, will continue their successful leadership.
President-elect Obama has even greater plans to spend more money in order to spend our way to financial health.
Hey, we can just print all the money we need anyways. What do you think we have the Fed for?
Besides ... and this is the best part ... we don't even have to pay the bill for this spending spree.  Our children and grandchildren will be picking up the tab!

Detroit Auto IndustryAs we discussed previously, labor unions are not only consistent with free market principles, but in fact, are economically beneficial, because they perform essential purposes necessary for a free society - the right of association and to coordinate for legitimate purposes, as well as, providing a natural market alternative to socialism's barrel of a gun.

As the economics of our country today look dire - in no small thanks to the shenanigans of government meddling in the mortgage market, the insatiable political desire for money, and the Federal Reserve acting ...
