Political discourse in America at one time, actually dealt with issues of substance that were debated among people and not "experts." People argued philosophy and trade, politicians proclaimed what they couldn't do, and the central bank (monetary policy) was a significant issue among the populace as well.
For example, Washington's Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, argued that a central bank violates natural property law, and constitutionality of the claimed authorized powers, were weak at best! Washington signed the bill regardless, creating the (First) Bank of the United States, but just think about it ... natural law, monetary policy, constitionality and authorized powers were a part of the debate.
