There have been some media reports about Bryce Harper, a 16-year old prodigy who will leave high school early to pursue his vocation at the college - and ultimately, professional - level. This wouldn't be terribly controversial except for the fact that Harper is a baseball prodigy, so naturally there's a lot of hand-wringing from the nation's sports commentariat. One writer said Harper's decision to forego two years of high school eligibility to play junior college baseball "makes a mockery of our educational system."

A pillar of the schooling religion is the notion that without at least 13-17 years of state-directed instruction, a person will never live a "meaningful" ...

Krugman Did Cause the Housing Bubble

Note 06/19/09: It appears that I'm losing my formating on the syndicated posts. Hopefully, I'll figure it out and get them back to normal.

Here is Paul Krugman from his blog trying to deny that he was a persistent advocate for the housing bubble and below that are quotes from him just prior to the bubble taking off. ht Benjamin Lee

"And I was on the grassy knoll, too"

One of the funny aspects of being a somewhat, um, forceful writer is that I'm regularly accused of all sorts of villainy. I was personally responsible for the demise of Enron; my nonexistent son worked for Hillary; etc.. The latest seems to be that I called for the creation ...

Obama's comments were mushy, yes, but at least he said the most important thing, according to AP:

He said it's up to Iran to determine its own leaders but that the country must respect voters' choice.

Why then have reputable people continued to pass harsh judgment? And why would AP paraphrase what would have been Obama’s key statement?

Turns out Obama said no such thing. What he actually said is that the VOICES of the Iranian people should be heard and respected, not their votes:...

In a free country with a free press, the media (supposedly) acts as a watchdog for the people. Well, say good-bye to the free press ... ABC News has decided to be the government's lap-dog, instead of the people's watchdog.

I took the following screenshot this morning.  All propaganda. All the Time!

state-run-media

ABC News has decided not to hide their infatuation with the Obama Administration any longer, so they're moving into the White House!  Working with the Obama team, they'll be putting together a carefully orchestrated infomercial to sell us on Obamacare.

Good-bye freedom.  Hello tyranny.

Pulling Back the Curtain on Paul Krugman

Greg Ransom  2009-06-16  Mises, Syndicated  Comments Off

"To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble."

-- Paul Krugman in 2002

I think of Paul Krugman as the great Naked Emperor of the economics profession, and when I listen to the good professor as I did today to his Robbins Lectures, I can't avoid picturing the man naked and alone stammer out the words I'm hearing in his nervous "crazy man" voice. Count yourself lucky if you don't ...

Michael Steele and the Republican Party

theCL  2009-06-16  Open Source, Party Politics  Comments Off

Let's talk about the Republican Party ...
The Republican Party has had close to 8 months to get its act in gear, yet they still leave intelligent people like Monique Stuart wondering, "Is the Republican strategy to win by default?"
That's a good question.
Others, like AWR Hawkins at American Thinker question Republican Chairman Michael Steele, the Faltering Leader of a Struggling Party.  I think that both address valid points, but also that there's more to it ... more, quite frankly, than most are willing to accept.

Hawkins sums up his article with the following paragraph:

Steele appears to be

The Destruction of Capitalism (and Civilization)

Art Carden  2009-06-16  Mises, Syndicated  Comments Off

I fear that we are seeing now in the United States what Ludwig von Mises called "a return to barbarism." Rhetoric about "working together" and understanding our common responsibilities to one another is superficially appealing, but it is fundamentally divisive. Embedded in these statements are assumptions about who is to serve and who is to be served. It necessarily assumes a class of parasites and a class of hosts. It does not recognize the fundamental and ennobling effects of capitalism. FULL ARTICLE
