Did you catch this recent headline about food prices?

Global food prices hit record high

Food prices hit a record high last month, surpassing the levels seen during the 2007-08 crisis, the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation said on Wednesday.

The Rome-based organisation said the spike was not a crisis. But Abdolreza Abbassian, senior economist at the FAO, acknowledged that the situation was "alarming". He added: "It will be foolish to assume this is the peak."

The jump will increase fears about the repetition of the crisis of 2007-2008. However, poor countries have not so far seen the wave of food riots that rocked countries such as Haiti and Bangladesh two years ago, when agricultural commodities prices jumped.

The increase in food costs will also hit developed economies, with companies from McDonalds to Kraft raising retail prices. Higher food prices are also boosting overall inflation, which is above the preferred targets of central banks in Europe.

What about this one?

World Food Prices Jump to Record on Sugar, Oilseeds

World food prices rose to a record in December on higher sugar, grain and oilseed costs, the United Nations said, exceeding levels reached in 2008 that sparked deadly riots from Haiti to Egypt.

An index of 55 food commodities tracked by the Food and Agriculture Organization gained for a sixth month to 214.7 points, above the previous all-time high of 213.5 in June 2008, the Rome-based UN agency said in a monthly report. The gauges for sugar and meat prices advanced to records.

Sugar climbed for a third year in a row in 2010, and corn jumped the most in four years in Chicago. Food prices may rise more unless the world grain crop increases “significantly” in 2011, the FAO said Nov. 17. At least 13 people died last year in Mozambique in protests against plans to lift bread prices.

Grocery prices are rising.

Fast.

JPMorgan: Surging Food Prices Fueling Global Inflation

Rising food prices are stoking global inflation with many agricultural commodity markets driven higher by bad weather in key producing countries, a senior trader at JPMorgan said.

"If you break down the inflation numbers then the impact of food has been extremely significant," Will Shropshire, head of investor trading, product development and agriculturals for JPMorgan said in an interview.

"Increased prices for key agricultural food components (are) undoubtedly going to have an impact on inflation," he added.

High food prices have moved to the top of policymakers' agendas because of worries about the impact on inflation, protectionism and unrest.

The United Nations' food agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said last Wednesday that food prices hit a record high last month, above 2008 levels when riots broke out in countries as far afield as Egypt, Cameroon and Haiti.

CHART OF THE DAY: Global Food Prices About To Break An All Time High

A food crisis in 2011?

I don't know. Only time will tell ...

But you don't need a crystal ball to see that the trend is clear ... That not long from now, it will cost you a lot more just to eat.

Oh. And you won't be making any more money.

Probably less.

You don't need to be an "economist" to see what's going on either, do you? To understand the implications ...

The strain on families, the ever-tightening budgets, the regression in lifestyle ...

Food prices were up for the sixth month in a row.

Yes. It really can happen here.

Food Riots Commence As The Fed's Loose Money Policy Leads To First Violence Of 2011.

Are you prepared?

Food and Freedom

Today, less than 1% of Americans live on farms. This single demographic shift makes all the difference. And it is not only the lack of land that is the issue. The skills necessary to cultivate a garden or to care for livestock have largely been forgotten. Or to put matters in a somewhat different light, who is better prepared: a) the urban-dweller who works for a wage and rents a flat on the 15th floor of a high-rise, or b) the person who owns a bit of land and has developed the skills to grow a significant portion of his own food? Jefferson’s yeoman farmer whispers from a forgotten time. Can you hear him?

Perhaps this crisis is overblown. Perhaps it is simply being used as cover for the consolidation of power. That much is obviously true. But if the sky really is falling, we need to be wise. We should not blindly trust the fixers to fix the problem. After all, they created the problems in the first place. They very well could make matters worse. What to do? In my worst moments, I’m tempted to move to a mountain with a stockpile of beans and bullets and ride it out. But with sober reflection, I think there are some simple steps that virtually anyone can take. The most pressing and obvious is to figure out ways to become more dependent on local food sources. Ideally, this means growing some of your own food. This will, obviously, involve plenty of hard work, a steep learning curve, and time. Even in cities, space can be found for cultivating gardens and small animal husbandry; although, we’re going to have to get over our aversion to manual labor, to dirt and blood, to dung and death.

All the Ruling Class bickering over TAX HIKES (which in their Orwellian language are called tax "cuts"), should tell you all you need to know about where the economy is heading. Down the frickin' drain.

“Every single empire, in its official discourse, has said that it is not like all the others, that its circumstances are special, that it has a mission to enlighten, civilize, bring order and democracy, and that it uses force only as a last resort.” – Edward Said

The increasingly fragile American Empire has been built on a foundation of lies. Lies we tell ourselves and Big lies spread by our government. The shit is so deep you can stir it with a stick. As we enter another holiday season the mainstream corporate mass media will relegate you to the status of consumer. This is a disgusting term that dehumanizes all Americans. You are nothing but a blot to corporations and advertisers selling you electronic doohickeys that they convince you that you must have. Propaganda about consumer spending being essential to an economic recovery is spewed from 52 inch HDTVs across the land, 24 hours per day, by CNBC, Fox, CBS and the other corporate owned media that generate billions in profits from selling advertising to corporations schilling material goods to thoughtless American consumers.

Politicians and bureaucrats, both Democratic and Republican alike, actually believe it's all about them. They believe the world revolves around Washington DC. They believe your hard-earned income is theirs for the taking. They think laws are written to curry favor with their biggest donors. That money is to be counterfeited at their whim. The internet is theirs to control. Bombs are dropped for their technocratic Utopian dreams. You get the point.

Bottom-line: They hate us! Passionately.

Hang your hopes on politics and politicians at your own peril. The smart people are getting prepared.

A Real Emergency Fund

Here is a breakdown guide for a Real Emergency Fund:

Let’s say you were going to set aside $5000 worth of currency for a disaster. This is how I would break it down, you might do things different. Come up with a plan that works for you.

$1000 – Gold Bullion Coins – 1/10 oz. size (20% of your EF)
$1500 – US Dollars – by $20 and $10 bills (30% of your EF)
$1500 – Silver Bullion Coins – All sizes (30% of your EF)
$1000 – Barter items (see list below) (20% of your EF)

Remember – come up with your "Real Emergency Fund" after you have completed your water, food, weapon/ammo, shelter, transportation and Bug Out Bag plans.

Here is a short list of ideas for Emergency Barter Items:

Tobacco: If packed in an airtight containers can keep for a very long time.
Canned Meat: Spam, don't laugh it stays good for a long time and it is great source of protein and fat.
Batteries: Alkaline and Lithium's batteries will be hard to get items.
Synthetic Oil: Full synthetic oils have long shelf lives and numerous uses. Also If filtered they can be re-used many times.
Antibiotics: Another great barter item worth huge exchange when your sick you'll "make-a-deal".
Multi Vitamins: Often overlooked but in a survival situation this will be essential to maintaining good health from poor nutrition.
Seeds: Another great barter item especially if you live in a good growing climate.
Ammo: Shotgun (12 gauge & 20 gauge), 22LR, 9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56mm/.223, .270, .308 (Note: Even if you don't own a .22, stocking 22LR ammo is a wise choice for barter because it is cheap and a lot of people own .22 Rifles)
Shampoo: A good barter luxury hygiene item that can double as soap.
Disposable Razors: People will like to be clean shaven.
Soap & Laundry Detergent: Good hygiene is important
Allergy medicine: You might not have them but a lot of people do.
Hard alcohol: It will keep for a long time and it also has a medicinal value as well. Wines will also last a long time. Beer, sorry not a good choice.
Aloe Vera: Good medical uses
Animal traps: An easy way to hunt without leaving your house.
Antacids – Heart burn may follow a bad diet
Antibiotics – Good medical uses
Anti-histamines – Good medical uses
Antiseptic – Good medical uses
Apple cider vinegar – Many uses
Aspirin – Good medical uses
Baby formula – Might be worth a lot to the right person
Can openers – Nothing worse than wasting half of the can of food trying to get it open
Candles – Beats sitting in the dark
Canned food – Easy to trade and always in demand
Coffee – Good coffee might be worth a lot to the right person
Cooking oil – Many uses
Fishing gear – Low stress way to gather food
Flashlights – As long as they come with batteries
Flour – Many cooking uses
Sea salt: See The Survival Mom's article on this, good read.
Tea – Medical uses and worth a lot to tea drinkers
Toilet paper – like gold
Tools – if you have extras and can trade they will be valuable

Because it sure is happening across the globe ...

Sarkozy stands firm as pension protests escalate

More than 3 million demonstrators – one in 20 of all French people – marched yesterday against the President's plans to raise the standard retirement age from 60 to 62. Tens of thousands of students joined the marches for the first time, threatening to radicalise the protests and broaden them into a rebellion against a deeply unpopular presidency.

Militant union branches in the railway and oil-refining industries were pushing last night for a showdown with Mr Sarkozy, who has made reform of the loss-making state pension system the make-or-break issue of his final 20 months in office.

Now, consider the following ...

US Cities Face Half a Trillion Dollars of Public Pension Deficits

Social Security Announces They Will Screw the Elderly, Again, in 2011

Foreclosure Fraud: It's Worse Than You Think

So, we have the same (if not worse) pension problems as France, retirees are getting screwed over by Congress again (just like France), and the foreclosure fraud scandal is just the tip of the iceberg on the problems still facing the banks.

It's simply unrealistic to believe that civil unrest is completely out of the question here in America, so we better start taking this subject seriously. Wouldn't you agree?

Mean Street: America’s Coming Civil Unrest?

There’s so much uncertainty and anger over so many things – California’s budget cuts, civilian trials for 9/11 terrorists, scandal after scandal in Washington and of course, ObamaCare – that a little civil unrest in the coming months wouldn’t surprise me.

Strong words. Of course, it’s not something I want to see. Those of us who grew up watching TV in the late sixties and seventies have had our fill of strikes, riots and general chaos. It’s not a society we want for our children.

But history doesn’t care about what we want. It just happens…

[T]he ugliness could come from anywhere – the Left, the Center or the Right. Almost everyone in America thinks they’ve been betrayed.

There are plenty of left-wing activists who feel let down by their people in Congress and the White House. Gitmo is still open. The public option is dead.

On the political center and right, of course, the fire of betrayal also burns. But it’s a different kind of betrayal – they see it as Washington forsaking the values of the nation’s Founding Fathers. This is the Tea Party anger, the Glenn Beck anger.

It’s the anger of Americans who still believe ours is a nation of property rights. They see politicians as having made it a nation of entitlements.

Don’t dismiss it as some kooky extremism. This anger is much broader than even the millions who follow Rush Limbaugh or Fox News. Think tens of millions.

It’s an anger I see in my father who votes libertarian. It’s an anger I see in my friends who now curse their votes for Obama. And it’s an anger I see in myself.

Yes indeed, Americans are angry ... and righteously so.

You may think this is "extreme," but the Ruling Class certainly IS taking the possibility of civil unrest seriously. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced deep concern over civil unrest, and the U.S. Congress is actually gearing up for civil unrest ... in diabolical ways.

Translated from Newspeak to English, sounds a lot like FEMA internment camps if you ask me. Talk about a "slippery slope" ...

Nah, c'mon now ... Our patriotic, All-American Washington Overlords would never do something like that!

Government Preparing for Civil Unrest in America

The Economic and Social Crisis

The financial meltdown has unleashed a latent and emergent social crisis across the United States.

What is at stake is the fraudulent confiscation of lifelong savings and pension funds, the appropriation of tax revenues to finance the trillion dollar "bank bailouts", which ultimately serve to line the pockets of the richest people in America.

This economic crisis is in large part the result of financial manipulation and outright fraud to the detriment of entire populations, leading to a renewed wave of corporate bankruptcies, mass unemployment and poverty.

The criminalization of the global financial system, characterized by a "Shadow Banking" network has resulted in the centralization of bank power and an unprecedented concentration of private wealth.

Obama's "economic stimulus" package and budget proposals contribute to a further process of concentration and centralization of bank power, the cumulative effects of which will eventually resul in large scale corporate, bankruptcies, a new wave of foreclosures not to mention fiscal collapse and the downfall of State social programs.

The cumulative decline of real economic activity backlashes on employment and wages, which in turn leads to a collapse in purchaisng power. The proposed "solution" under the Obama administration contributes to exacerbating rather than alleviating social inequalities and the process of wealth concentration.

The Protest Movement

When people across America, whose lives have been shattered and destroyed, come to realize the true face of the global "free market" system, the legitimacy of Wall Street, the Federal Reserve and the US administration will be challenged.

A latent protest movement directed against the seat of economic and political power is unfolding.

How this process will occur is hard to predict. All sectors of American society are potentially affected: wage earners, small, medium and even large businesses, farmers, professionals, federal, State and municipal employees, students, teachers, health workers, and unemployed. Protests will initially emerge from these various sectors. There is, however, at this stage, no organized national resistance movement directed against the administration's economic and financial agenda.

Obama's populist rhetoric conceals the true nature of macro-economic policy. Acting on behalf of Wall Street, the administration's economic package, which includes close to a trillion dollar "aid" package for the financial services industry, coupled with massive austerity measures, contributes to precipitating America into a bottomless crisis.

"Orwellian Solution" to the Great Depression: Curbing Civil Unrest

At this particular juncture, there is no economic recovery program in sight. The Washington-Wall Street consensus prevails. There are no policies, no alternatives formulated from within the political and economic system. .

What is the way out? How will the US government face an impending social catastrophe?

The solution is to curb social unrest. The chosen avenue, inherited from the outgoing Bush administration is the reinforcement of the Homeland Security apparatus and the militarization of civilian State institutions.

The outgoing administration has laid the groundwork. Various pieces of "anti-terrorist" legislation (including the Patriot Acts) and presidential directives have been put in place since 2001, largely using the pretext of the "Global War on Terrorism."

Homeland Security's Internment Camps

Directly related to the issue of curbing social unrest, cohesive system of detention camps is also envisaged, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon.

A bill entitled the National Emergency Centers Establishment Act (HR 645) was introduced in the US Congress in January. It calls for the establishment of six national emergency centers in major regions in the US to be located on existing military installations.

Click over and read that whole article and think about what it says. Call it "extreme" if it makes you feel better, but if you ask me, it's HR 645 that is extreme!

Do yourself and your family a favor by at least being prepared.

Riots and Civil Unrest in America

I am writing this article not to glorify what I have seen, but perhaps to make some of you think about some unknowns. I am a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 1980s, and when I honorably discharged I was recruited into law enforcement at a termination of service briefing at Fort Irwin, California. From there I went into law enforcement in Los Angeles for over 20 years and never looked back. I am writing this article because many people are writing about living through and how to survive civil unrest (I am sorry, a riot is a riot no matter what you call it), but I don’t think many of the readers can comprehend what it is like.

The Los Angeles riots in 1992 were some of the craziest times I have ever lived through, and even my military background didn’t prepare me for what we saw. I am not here to talk politics or why the riots kicked off; I am only here to write about what I witnessed and give the readers of SurvivalBlog.com a glimpse of what happened from the eyes of a young man.

Mob Mentality. When dealing with people during the riots in Los Angeles, many of the people we were dealing with had no idea why they were rioting. They were merely opportunists who were taking advantage of free stuff that was being looted from any store that was not guarded. And when I say guarded, I mean seriously guarded (more on this later). The mob mentality meant that if someone was looting a store, everyone with the mentality had to loot the same store before the shelves were empty and they didn’t get their share. It was almost like a shark feeding frenzy with no real purpose. But, in the middle of this, there were people pointing to different buildings saying, “Burn that one” or other orders. Those people had a purpose, and loot wasn’t it.

I mention this because whenever if and when civil unrest hits again for whatever purpose, you can bet that this will probably be the case again. During civil unrest, if you try to analyze the event with rational thought, you will not be able to figure out the smallest detail let alone the big picture. There is no order or sense of order, and for most Americans that is a place that no one really thinks about. Crime was happening all around us, but there really wasn’t a crime trend or purpose for it other than violence itself. If you are reading this and are saying to yourself, “This idiot doesn’t know how to write and he is not making sense!”, then you are grasping what I am saying. The most dangerous people in the riots were the opportunists. They saw an opportunity and went for it. Whether that opportunity was revenge on an enemy that could be blamed on some random act of violence, or that big screen TV that he had been wanting for a while down at the local electronics store.

Yes, it can happen here. In fact, it already has. Potential civil unrest is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly, especially when you consider that America truly is, the world is at a tipping point.

Knowledge and preparation never hurts.

Let's face it, the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a precarious situation. With nobody ever experiencing a disaster like this before, there's nobody that knows what to do about it either.

Luckily we escaped Hurricane Alex, but there are still many unknown dangers needing to be addressed. I'm not a scientist, nor am I pretending to be, but I think it's important to look at the various worstcase scenarios and potential outcomes, especially in a situation never experienced before.

I report. You decide.

Toxic Chemicals

Nearly Every Cleanup Worker from Exxon Valdez Now Dead?

Merle Savage is one of those that helped cleanup the beaches in 1989 after the Exxon Valdez spill and she is trying to warn the workers in the Gulf and inform them what happened in 1989.. She wrote a book about her experience: Silence in the Sound. Her website is here. Savage explains that her health problems began almost immediately:

After working for 3 days on the oily beaches, I had a persistent cough that developed into bronchitis, headaches, sore throat, upset stomach and fatigue. On the 4th day I reported to the sick bay and was given medication by the doctor who was supplied by VECO, and on the way to my room, I fainted. I had 3 days of bed rest, but went back to work with recurring symptoms. Of the workers that I supervised 80% had the same medical problems. I wonder how many other cleanup workers, like me, went home thinking we would get better – but didn’t? The symptoms escalated until my medical condition took over my life, and was so bad that I have been unable to hold a job.

Savage breathed in crude oil and dispersant for weeks as she and her coworkers cleaned up the beaches that summer. One of the dispersants used that summer was Corexit 9580. Another was Inipol EAP22, also toxic.

Please click over and read Pat Austin's entire detailed report. She provides a lot of good information about the potential health risks workers are facing as they clean up the oil spill. It makes you wonder why the Obama administration is blocking media access to Gulf response. doesn't it?

Methane Gas

Could the massive deposits of methane gas around the spill turn into an epic disaster?

What is happening is a massive bulge is forming around the wellhead. Reports have the seabed rising 20 feet. The reason for the bulge is methane gas. Normally, the flow from an oil well will contain around 5% methane gas. This is what you see being burned off above ground at oil wells everywhere as methane gas is the primary component of natural gas. So the threat is not one of toxicity from burning of the methane. It is the highly explosive nature of it. Reports are coming in of at least 40% methane and air samples taken around the gulf have shown levels thousands of times too high.

So the possibility exists that they cannot stop the leak even with a successful relief well intersect. And the other more sinister possibility remains. If a massive gas bulge is growing under the seabed, what if it escapes and rises to the surface? ... what will happen?[T]he gas will rise to the surface and collect just above it due to its density ... A potentially explosive pool. Any spark, perhaps by lightning, would then set off a mind-boggling explosion. A tsunami would be sure to follow, how big we can only guess. Any ships in the area would be in obvious peril.

It's said that the pressure at the bottom of the hole is anywhere up to 100,000 pounds per square inch, so if the riser pipe is broken in between the bottom and the Blowout Preventer (at the sea floor), oil is escaping into the surrounding strata, blasting through cracks and fissures, and building a potentially explosive bulge of methane gas.

The result of such an explosion would be a nightmare scenario too ... a supersonic tsunami greater in magnitude than the 2004 Indonesian tsunami which killed more than 600,000 people.

However, Washington's Blog reports that this doomsday scenario isn't credible, but the methane gas could kill all life in large areas of the Gulf.

A U.S. scientist says that methane levels in the Gulf are "astonishingly high", that 1 million times the normal level of methane gas has been found in some regions near the oil spill, high enough to create "dead zones" devoid of life.

Another scientist writes:

Researchers studying the [plumes] have found concentrations of methane up to 10,000 times greater than normal and oxygen levels depleted by 40 percent below normal.

And see this and this.

This unprecedented release of methane into the ocean could kill all life within large swaths of the Gulf of Mexico.

But what about the potential explosion and resulting tsunami? Well, according to a study called Project "Deep Spill," the methane gas is being absorbed by the sea.

Only 2% of the oil released in a deepwater blowout may actually make it to the surface. That’s as little as 2% naturally without the use of dispersants. Add dispersants into the equation and it could be less then one percent of oil that makes it to the surface.

None of the methane released from the deepwater blowout made it to the surface. The study found that released natural gas may dissolve completely within the water column if it is released from a deep enough depth relative to the gas flow rate.

Another methane gas scenario is that as the gas rises to the surface, it changes the buoyancy of the water, making it lighter than air. Thus sinking ships within minutes.

According to a report in the latest New Scientist exploding Methane gas is the culprit.

"When the gas bubbles up from the surface, it lowers the density of the water, and therefore its buoyancy," marine geologist Alan Judd from the University of Sunderland told the journal. "Any ship caught above would sink as if it were in a lift shaft." People jumping overboard in lifejackets would also sink immediately.

But Project "Deep Spill" seems to put that theory to rest too.

The buoyant parts of the oil released in a deepwater blowout split from the main plume within the first 200 meters of release. Those buoyant parts, which represent only a small portion of the total amount of oil, turn into small droplets that float to the surface.

Within the first 100 to 200 meters from the source of the release the the majority of the oil loses its buoyancy and stops rising. This majority of the oil remains submerged in an underwater plume that is then carried away by subsurface currents.

I have no idea who's right or wrong, I just think it's valuable to learn about these worstcase scenarios. After all, you never know what could happen.

No matter what though, all forms of life around the gulf are going to pay a heavy toll. This disaster is very sad indeed.

We'll look at more gulf oil doomsday scenarios in a future post.
