Sunstein and Vermeule write that many conspiracy theories "are initiated and spread, quite intentionally, by conspiracy entrepreneurs who profit directly or indirectly from propagating their theories."
Yep. The tobacco lobby succeeded for decades in casting doubt on the scientific consensus on cancer and smoking. They trotted out their own pet "scientists" and did their own "studies". As long as they could keep the politicians undecided and the public confused, there would be no action taken against their practices and their profits.
In the meantime, people died.
The same pet "scientists" that did such a great job for the tobbacco industry now use their expertise to help out the fossil fuel industry.

The global warming denier disinformation campaign did not spring out of thin air. It has a well-documented history.
