Let's see ... been working on posting this since yesterday ... still a long way to go before I get to call myself a geek.  :-)

In the following video, D.L. Hughley interviews Rep. Ron Paul (R), in the best performance by a conservative since President Ronald Reagan!

Admittedly, I didn't dig deep ... but looking through a few of the more "popular" Republican blogs/sites, I didn't even find this interview mentioned.  So much for "getting back to principles" and learning from their latest defeats.

This is why I so often remind everyone that being "conservative" is different from being "Republican."

There's a reason Ron Paul is catching on with young voters, but the question remains ... Will the rest of the Republican Party learn anything from Paul, or just continue trying to convince "we the people" that they've changed, when in reality, they plan to continue in their Rockefeller-Republican ways.

From Ron's Revolution by Dave Kopel in 2007 (emphasis added):

Undoubtedly Paul is being helped by the Iraq issue, since he is the only Republican candidate who advocates withdrawal. But it would be a mistake to characterize his campaign as single-issue in the sense of George McGovern's in 1972 or Tom Tancredo's today. Some of Paul's fans disagree with him on the Iraq question, but like him enough on other issues to support him overall. His supporters span a broad ideological spectrum, because they can find common ground in our Constitution's rights and freedoms. How many other Republican candidates are getting Democrats to re-register as Republicans so they can participate in the Republican primaries?

The Republican Revolution of 1994 promised substantial shrinkage of a bloated federal government ... and eventually became part of the problem.

But deep down there's still a hunger among much of the Republican base for someone who will shrink the Leviathan, rather than merely attempt to use it for conservative ends.

Like the Ronald Reagan message (and unlike the Pat Buchanan message), the Ron Paul message is fundamentally positive. There may be some anger about the depredations of huge and aggressive government, but the campaign's theme is "Hope for America" and its premise is that the American people are good people who can achieve the best for themselves ...

Polls show that about quarter of Americans are libertarians, in a general sense, so Paul has lots of room for growth ... Ronald Reagan is among the many candidates who have proven that many voters will support someone even if they disagree with him on many issues, if they respect his integrity and find hope in his optimistic vision.

And from the Young Americans For Liberty Blog:

... it is interesting to watch this interview and see the libertarian streak that resides within most Americans come out of Hughley as he and Dr. Paul discuss a variety of issues ranging from the economy to foreign policy to the Civil War and freeing the slaves.

One of my very few criticisms of Dr. Paul has been that he is not the most articulate person to lead a national political movement - something he has readily acknowledged himself ... I also like how he said Obama's goals of helping the "little guy" and achieving peace are noble, but his means of reaching those goals are where he parts ways with him - that is something I believe as well ... this is the best interview he has given as far as being a combination of good policy and good salesmanship ... it will help bring more young people into the fold.

This is still America, so limited-government, even anti-state is a message that resonates with people. Paul’s the only guy out there with that message, and he has a consistent track-record as a limited-government advocate to back it up.

As Obama’s inflationary socialist policies turn our recession into a depression … in 2012, Ron Paul could very well be the most popular guy in Washington!

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why “Republicans” are so scared of a true and trustworthy limited-government guy.

  • Michael, I couldn’t agree more. That might be the single best RP interview I’ve seen, and I immediately featured it on my site as soon as I saw it. I’ve also shown it to several of my friends who have generally libertarian feelings but don’t have enough of an interest in politics to really dig into this stuff. And being partially obsessed with psychology and sociology, I think it’s hard to overestimate the impact of a video featuring an old, white politician and a relatively young, black actor agreeing so much about things that hardly any Democrats or Republicans will fight for.
