Last August I argued that war with Iran is a) stupid, and b) is nothing more than bread and circus for the masses. The following list provides just a few reasons why the Ruling Class desperately needs to avert your attention from themselves:
- Real unemployment is around 22%
- 2 million more Americans will lose benefits this December
- Grocery prices are increasing
- Armed guards are being placed at unemployment offices
- The Federal government is already starting to bailout state governments
- Massive bank fraud
- Banks will need another round of "bailouts"
- QE2 would more accurately be called the Weimar Doctrine
- The Federal Reserve is going to implode
So as you can (hopefully) see, there's a lot the Ruling Class would like to keep "We the People" distracted from.
But, but ... Republicans won!
So what? Republicans can't be trusted to make the spending cuts we desperately need. Besides, they're in full support of trillion dollar wars (even though the government is flat broke).
Congress will not deal with reality ... reality will deal with us.
Here comes the bread and circus ...
Look back at FDR and the Great Depression. What finally resolved that economic crisis? World War II.
Here is where Obama is likely to prevail. With strong Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran's ambition to become a nuclear power, he can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.
I am not suggesting, of course, that the president incite a war to get reelected. But the nation will rally around Obama because Iran is the greatest threat to the world in the young century. If he can confront this threat and contain Iran's nuclear ambitions, he will have made the world safer and may be regarded as one of the most successful presidents in history.
First of all, one of the dumbest economic myths ever told is, that war is good for the economy. Destroying property and killing people is never, I repeat, NEVER good for the economy as Thomas DiLorenzo explains in the video below.
Second, even though Broder says he is "not suggesting ... the president incite a war to get reelected," that is in fact, exactly what he is doing!
Not only does he naively believe destroying property and killing people will "resolve" our economic crisis, but that Republicans will "urge" Obama on to boot (they will)! It's plain as day: No Iran war, no 2012 win. Krugman has argued for war too. Mass human slaughter as "stimulus?"
Bread and circus for the masses.
Still don't buy it? Still think the government that lies to you about everything else, for some reason or other, tells the truth about war?
Then answer why, almost 10 years after 9/11, Osama bin Laden is livin' large in Pakistan, while US soldiers are dying to protect Hamid Karzai's crooked government as they raise the caliphate in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Oh, and who hates your freedom again?
A war with Iran is just bread and circus for the masses, hoping to keep you focused on enemies abroad, instead of the enemies right here at home in Washington DC. Unfortunately, the deception is working.
