I think it is somewhat ironic when you have scientists trying to prove there is no God because those who are so bent on destroying God look to science as their great comforter and the provider of their own form of spirituality.
It's like when scientists take existing material, use their INTELLIGENCE and try to DESIGN a form of life to prove the universe was created on accident. I don't understand. If a scientist created life, wouldn't that prove other life must have been created by something with intelligence?
This morning, I turned on FOX News and Martha MacCallum was interviewing Corey Powell, the Editor in Chief of Discover Magazine, about the discovery of some planets that may be like Earth and have the potential to have life.
I don't know if Mr. Powell is an atheist or if he has any religious beliefs, but he said something I thought showed his true beliefs. He said, about the size of the universe and the looking for Earth-like planets, he said "it comes down to whether you believe in a wasteful universe or a meaningful universe" and he believes in a meaningful universe.
Whether you are an atheist or you believe in God, the size of the universe has no bearing on meaning. For atheists, life really has no meaning other than existing for pleasure and survival, so no matter if there is life out there or not, it bears no influence an atheist's life because it would be too far away to ever influence our planet.
If you believe in a deity, then the meaning of life comes from that deity. And if you believe your deity that created everything with no purpose, then re-read what I wrote about the meaning of life elsewhere on atheists. It just doesn't matter.
What I would say to Powell if I could, would be that if the universe turns out to be void of life everywhere but Earth, it is not a waste.
Powell has that attitude I see in some scientists and most Liberals that says humans are insignificant and do not deserve a universe created just for our pleasure. There has to be a reason why the universe is so big and it doesn't involve us because humans don't really matter.
There has also been a lot of discussion about whether the discovery of alien life would render the Christian religion (and the Jewish and Islamic views as well) void.
Nope. Christianity is based on human beings and our sinful nature. The Bible tells us God created the universe and then focuses on Earth and the fall of man. If there are other sentient beings out there, they were created by God and have no impact on our salvation. If they did, then God would have instructed us on that through his Word.
If there are other worlds with life on them, God has a reason for creating them and that has no impact on Christianity.
I hate to see people basing the value of the universe based on whether or not Earth holds all life.
It really doesn't matter.
Because we really do matter.
