The sweeping aside of the Bill of Rights coincides with the massive expansion of the Federal government. We are still a people that love freedom. The success of the statists is largely due to the fact that their real purpose is always hidden. The people's distrust of government is a long standing American tradition, and is a healthy, good thing... whether or not David Brooks can figure it out.
